HUMILITY IS ESSENTIAL!

(Psalm 25:8-9)

Psalm 25:8-9 says, “Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He teaches sinners in the way. The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches His way.” This passage shows the importance of having humility in receiving God’s Word.  Humbly listening to instruction is essential even in secular matters, but it is especially important in the spiritual realm. James 1:21-22 also emphasizes the concept of humbly receiving God’s Word.  It points out, “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” (Note also 1 Sam. 3:9, Pb. 12:15 and 2 Chron. 7:14.)  In the Parable of the Sower (Mt. 13), Jesus taught the importance of people having the right disposition when presented with God’s Word.

Further, Jesus said to His disciples, after calling a little child to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Mt. 18:3-4).

Not only must we be willing to listen, but we also must have a willingness to obey.  In verse 10 of Psalm 25, it is added, “All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.”  Sadly, many will not be able to go to heaven because they lack humility, are unwilling to receive teaching, and will not obey (Jn. 8:32, Heb. 5:8-9).
