“THE EMPTY PEW”

Ellen Kyle

If I run out of water I can refill my glass,
If the tank is on empty I can fill it with gas.
I can fill my plate and other things too,
But the thing I can’t fill is your empty pew.
If your place is empty because you are ill,
I know you’ll be back if it is God’s will.
If your place is empty because you’re out of town,
I know your place will be filled and I don’t need to frown.
But if your place is empty cause for God you don’t care,
I look and see that empty place, my heart weeps in despair.
That empty spot cries out to me, a soul once found is lost,
If that spot stays empty, you have failed to count the cost.
Don’t let cares, worries or temptations make you say,
I know my spot is empty, it won’t matter anyway.
Sure someone else might sit there and fill your empty pew,
But that spot will still be empty,
if it should be filled by you.
