A USELESS RELIGION
Mike Johnson
James 1:26 says, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”
Do you know that our religion can become vain? First, Jesus pointed out that our worship is futile if we teach the doctrine and commandments of men (Mt. 15:8-9). Second, even if we believe the correct doctrine, worship correctly and teach the right precepts, our religion can be “useless.” We can do this by failing to bridle (to exercise control over) our tongues. People could attend every service, sing praises to God, partake of the Lord’s Supper, and give of their means every Sunday. He may know the truth about baptism, instrumental music, and he may fully understand what the Bible teaches about divorce and remarriage. However, if a person cannot control his tongue, he will be lost. James 3:8 says the tongue is an unruly evil full of deadly poison. Proverbs 21:2 points out, “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” Therefore, we must control our tongues! The consequences of not doing so are enormous!
