GOD IS OMNISCIENT

Mike Johnson

God is omniscient, which means He has infinite knowledge, i.e., He knows all. I John 3:20 points out that God “knows all things,” and Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.”

One way God reveals His knowledge is through the prophecies of the Bible.  In the Old Testament, various inspired prophets predicted, for example, the establishment of the church (Is. 2:1-4, Dan. 2).  Also, Isaiah 53 speaks in detail of the life, mission, and death of Christ.  The many Old Testament prophecies indeed reveal God’s vast knowledge.

Further, God is the Creator of the universe, which reveals His extensive knowledge also.  Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  Psalm 19:1-3 points out, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.”

If we examine a product, such as a watch, a telephone, or an automobile, we learn about the knowledge of the maker of that product.  When we study the universe God created, there is a reminder of His vast knowledge.  God made the sun, for example, precisely big enough and far enough away to do what it is supposed to do.  He created the make-up of the atmosphere, the size of the earth, and the distance it is away from the sun, precisely as needed to sustain life on earth. As Psalm 19 reveals, God’s creation is a continuous language, spoken throughout the world, and it reveals His omniscience.

God also knows our spiritual condition, and one day all will give account based on the deeds we have done while in our bodies (II Cor. 5:10). II Timothy 2:19, says, “Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.'” Hebrews 4:13 says, “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” Because of God’s omniscience, every decision rendered on the Judgment Day will be correct.

We are in awe today when we think of the omniscience of God, which reveals itself in so many ways.
